Kale’s predicament is yet another symptom of a human crisis that requires urgent resources from all levels of government, the professor said. The crisis is closer to an emergency, said Tom Urbaniak, a Cape Breton University political science professor. There are more than 100 people living outside in and around Halifax and Dartmouth, according to an outreach worker with Out of the Cold.Ī 30-year-old man who needs a wheelchair to get around says he's been camping at Point Pleasant Park in Halifax for more than a week. Halifax is still faced with a homeless crisis. Well into winter, temperatures are dipping below freezing. I’m not getting enough money, food or rest." I’m wheeling around too much and asking for money. I need lots of food to recover and I’m not getting enough. He had been staying in a hotel for a while but recently lost the room. "I’m used to being heavy, right? I ain't heavy anymore." He’s been in out of the hospital since.Įach day, he crawls to his wheelchair and wheels himself out of the park to panhandle for food. Kale said he suffered serious frostbite while homeless last winter. A few metres from his tent sat a wheelchair lightly covered by the previous night’s snowfall. He asked that only his first name, Kale, be used. Saturday afternoon he sat bundled inside it while people and their dogs walked the nearby trails of the popular south-end Halifax park. Super disappointed. For the seventh straight night, he said, he’d slept in Point Pleasant Park in a tent. their host was by far the best I've ever seen. They don't even have karaoke anymore which was half the reason I went. I really wanted to like the new location because I loved the bar so much, but it's just so different. I think a good bit of people who used to go regularly must've stopped going.

I didn't see any of the people i used to see there on the nights I went. I feel sorry for the waitresses that have to navigate that maze when the place is packed I could barely make it to the bathroom. The layout of the eating area is horrible. Both times I went I felt like I could barely move.

The only walls that aren't windows are grey. nothing but the props they brought from the last place make this bar look pirate-y. The atmosphere feels more like an after work bar. I have gone twice, and am even open to going once more, but so far I'm really upset with how much I feel it's changed. However after they moved, in my opinion, a lot changed.

It always seemed like Cheers to me, in that even when a stranger would strike up a convo with you, they seemed like a friend. The atmosphere was homey, it never seemed overcrowded, and even when every seat was taken, you still felt like you could move around. We will definitely return! Almost forgot to mention, they have about 120 varieties of rum to taste!īefore mutiny moved, they were a great place. The place is not very big so you have to get there early for Happy Hour, but this place was well worth the trip.

Finally after Joe forced us (LOL) to try the dessert, which was a sampler of all the desserts piled on top of one another, we were ready to leave. We then ordered the cannonballs (deep fried macaroni) and the gumbo which was excellent. I am the DD so I was drinking water at this point.

My wife and I hung around after our daughter and son-in-law left and continued to sample more food and drink. The manager, Brian stopped by to see if everything was OK, and we told him how much we were impressed by the food, drinks, and service. Note that these beers samples are 8 ounces! We tried 3 of the varieties and all were very tasty. In addition to Happy Hour food specials, they offer a "Flight" tastings of 3 of the beers on tap. They were promptly delivered and tasted great. We ordered nachos, a basket of fries and some wings. He was super friendly and took the time to explain the menu and the drink options, as well as answering our many questions, since this was our first visit. It was a 30 mile dive so we were very hungry and thirsty when we arrived. We were seated at a table by a window and immediately approached by our server, Joe. My wife and I with our daughter and son-in-law visited the Mutiny Pirate Bar and Grille in Pasadena for their Sunday Happy Hour.
